5 and 5
In the series 5 and 5, I explore the fragile line between beauty and danger. My subjects are women, depicted in vulnerable poses, placed into ominous environments that turn beauty into something both admired and threatened. By repeating the same two images across five different mediums, I amplify the tension between desire and fear. The women appear unaware, exposed, and fragile, while the looming presences behind them underscore how beauty in American culture is celebrated yet also exploited as a vulnerability. These works dwell on that duality: women as objects of admiration, yet constantly under threat. They are a condemnation of the dangers and threat society places on and allows for women.
The repetition across mediums, including charcoal, acrylic, digital, and drawing, mirrors how these themes persist regardless of context. Beauty, danger, and threat remain inseparable. At the same time, the series is an exploration of realism and its evolution. Perfect realism is elusive, and I intentionally allow traces of process to remain visible. By repeating the same image in multiple mediums, I reveal how surface, texture, and technique change the emotional weight of a subject. This approach highlights the power of process and presentation in shaping perception.
